- KB Corel: Pinnacle Studio 17 Patch Update is now available
I think my experience was good "because" I have not been exposed to other video editing software, therefore I had no preconceptions about how things are "supposed" to work or where things are supposed to be. Based on my own experience I would give this 5 stars, but with the caveat that my usage is probably not advanced enough to expose flaws in the software.
On paper Pinnacle Studio has always seemed to offer a lot of bang for buck, with lots of features, plugins, extras, and the ability to work with all kinds of SD and HD footage. This version of Pinnacle Studio shares with its predecessor a user-friendly interface that is easy to get to grips with, especailly for those unfamiliar with video editing software.
However, on my Win 7 bit machine it is unstable - I have experienced random crashes requiring alt-delete closing of the application, and similar problems to what others have reported regarding audio drop-outs on HD output. In its current state, I can't recommend this product, unless you want to wait for a number of patches to be released in the hope that it gets made more stable and the audio and other bugs get ironed out. Unfortunately Pinnacle do have a bit of a history of releasing new versions of Studio before they have been properly tested.
In contrast, I have found Sony Vegas Movie Studio to work right out of the box and to be far more stable and free of bugs. This did not start up well, as I had problems with installation - it kept getting stuck on a file for considerable time and I though it had locked up. Eventually I just left it unattended and came back to find it had installed. Others have seen this issue, but it does work. My first impression was good in that unlike other video capture solutions I've used there wasn't endless popups getting me to buy other plugins or utilities.
I wanted to get my videos of the kids taken on various mobile phones over the years edited together and burnt onto a DVD - importing the videos was quite simple, but it didn't seem to search through sub directories, which was a pain. However, the clips - in mp4 format - were imported into the application and added to a library.
Dragged them from the library into the timeline, cut out bits I didn't want, added transitions and some simple titles. This is relatively simple use, but maybe I'll use it when I start making my blockbuster horror movie. I didn't experience any of the crashes On windows 8. Unlike other reviewers I've not had any problems with Studio 17, it installed fine and has worked great ever since. Now whether it's a case of I don't do anything advanced enough to reveal these reported bugs I don't know, but there you go.
I found it relatively easy to use, it doesn't conform to any stand UI other than it's own, but it doesn't take long to get used to. It encodes nice and quickly, opened every file I threw at it and I found editing simple and quick.
The Ultimate comes with a great collection of add-ons that will meet most peoples needs. If this is your first Video Editing Package purchase then you will be pleased with it, if you are considering upgrading from either Studio 16 or another package then it is trickier to answer.
Yes it is quicker than previous versions, but not in the sense that a 1 hour encode is going to be done in 5 minutes, yes it has new features, but do you actually need them?
This is all things that only you can answer. Overall I was impressed with Studio 17 and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it Let me say that I have been with Pinnacle from day one, but now with version 17 enough is enough.
The program is absolute rubbish, they had to release a patch the very day after it was released that gives you an idea, we are now up to five. I had a problem where I had to phone pinnacle, just asking for a short cut in order to download the program again, not much you would think. The following day I phoned again and was told this time my problem would be passed to another department and that they would contact me that day, yes you has guessed it no such reply was forth coming.
I have used Pinnacle for a number of years now and always found it to be an excellent tool for editing videos. It's a step up from Windows Movie Maker or whatever at a reasonable price and is pretty easy and intuitive to pick up and self teach, plenty of You Tube tutorials out there as well.
The past few editions have not added a great deal from the previous versions up to this point but this one does seem to have a few more bells and whistles, this could be because I am a couple of versions out of date now.
The unlimited tracks and speeded up processing make it a good improvement. The big drawback with other versions of pinnacle is the number of effects that aren't included - with Ultimate you get it up front. Worth the extra. Unfortunately that is not the case with this Pinnacle software, and this product regularly suffers from glitches and crashes, audio often falls out of sync with video, DVDs won't burn If you have a meaty PC and are patient enough for patches to come out then it might be worth a look, but for me it is too frustrating to persist with it.
I have been lying in my hospital bed looking forward to trying out this product, having purchased a much earlier edition many years ago. I must have been very unlucky as the product must install on some PCs, just not mine.
I got this product because in the past I enjoyed some good results from it. The new layout seems quite easy to navigate. The edit window is responsive which I like. There's a lot to the product and I probably need to do more extensive testing. But at first glance its up and running with no problems on the first install from the disc.

In , it was rebranded, and it changed owners again in , this time to Corel. Version 17 is the second edition under Corel, and installing it reminded us of how far it has come. The Ultimate edition we tested comes packed with extras; its timeline is straightforward and responsive to navigate; and media, effects, transitions and other assets are well organised. The effects and template libraries are no longer littered with chargeable extra content.
Instead, Studio 17 Ultimate includes some of the best effects of any consumer editor. The highlight is the Red Giant Filmmaker Toolkit, a suite of three effects that deliver sophisticated colour-grading treatments.
Other consumer editors claim to provide film-look effects, but the quality available here is in another league. A key new feature of Studio 17 Ultimate is support for 4K video. Preview performance on our Core i PC was unacceptably poor, however, with lots of dropped frames and long waits when navigating the timeline. This process took about twice as long to generate as the footage length.
This can take a heavy toll on progress, especially when making subtle tweaks to processor-intensive effects.
